How to get a job at a hostel

One way that I have found hostel jobs is to email several hostels with my resume in advance.  I've usually been offered several jobs -- sometimes just housekeeping to begin with, but you can work your way up from there.  If you make an effort to do a good job, you can usually get a letter of recommendation that will help you find your next hostel job.

Have you worked at a hostel?  Do you have any recommendations or questions about working at hostels?

Re: How to get a job at a hostel

My experience in China was completely different, if anything there would just be a hand scrawled note stuck to the wall asking for help....it was
very informal.

Sometimes I would just approach the family with an offer to wash my dishes for a free meal, then it would evolve from there into staying/eating for free
in exchange for a little cleaning and computer work.

Cheers!

Re: How to get a job at a hostel

Hey Everyone! My name is Conor and I currently manage Camp Jaz Hostel in Lastva Grbalskja near Budva, Montenegro.
I got this job through contacts I made while I lived here last year.
I think the most important things for a hostel and it's staff, a hostel that I would enjoy staying in anyway, is a friendly, open, knowledgable, attentive and clean person/place that feels like home. The hostel I run is about 7km from the main town.
It's out of the way but makes up for it with a great atmosphere and friendly staff.

I am moving to Canada in the winter and hope to do some hostel work there.
If there is anyone out there in Vancouver that is looking for a manager or someone to help out let me know.

Anywhere can feel like home with the right people.

Hope you are all well.

Conor
